“Agostino Arrivabene was born at Rivolta d’Adda, near Cremona, Italy on June 11, 1967. After graduating in 1991 at the Brera Art Academy in 1991, he focused on painting, drawing and etching. From the outset his attention was drawn to the Ancient Masters, Leonardo, Dürer and van Eyck above all else, leading him to travel extensively in Europe’s museums to gain a first hand view of their masterpieces of which he often made faithful reproductions. This research allowed him to revitalise and apply forgotten painting techniques (above all egg tempera), to utilise neglected materials and to prepare colours according to traditional methods (from lapis lazuli, cinnabar, pure indigo, madder, bistre, dragon’s blood, orpiment and from other materials). At the same time he also focuses on drawing and etching techniques. It was as an etcher that he won in 1998 the first prize as the Leonardo Sciascia amateur des estampes international competition presided by Piero Guccione. He held, the following year, his first one-man exhibition at Rivolta d’Adda and took part at the 32nd Suzzara Prize, where he won the President of the Republic’s silver medal. In 1994, the Museo Civico of Crema dedicated him a one-man exhibition entitled Memoria e desiderio. The following year, the Palazzo Sormani public library in Milan hosted an exhibition of the works he made between 1990 and 1995. The following year, he held his first exhibition in the United Sates, at the CFM Gallery of New York.. In the meanwhile, he held other one-man exhibitions (at Reggio Emilia, curated by Alberto Agazzani, in 1997; and at Milan’s Spazio Bocca, curated by Gian Franco Grechi) and took part in various collective shows (5th Cremona Biennale of Contemporary Art; 1st Postumia Biennale Giovani at the Gazoldo degli Ippoliti museum; La Nef de Fous at the Centre Internationale de l’Art Fantastique of Gruyères in Switzerland, which ultimately purchased from him a large-sized Pandora). A large monograph published by the Milan-based publishing house Bocca Editore was presented in 2001 during the anthology exhibition, curated by Alberto Agazzani at the Museo Civico of Crema, on works dating between 1988 and 2000. In that same year, he was invited by the art critic and historian Vittorio Sgarbi to take part in Surrealismo Padano and Pittura Fantastica in Italia, two big exhibitions respectively held in Piacenza and Trieste. Also in 2002 a one-man exhibition was held at the “Le Muse” centre of Andria. He started cooperating in 2003 with the Antonia Jannone gallery of Milan where he held a one-man exhibition entitled Paesaggi, which came with a catalogue introduced by Giorgio Soavi. He worked in the same year with the great set designer Pier Luigi Pizzi for Heinrich Marschner’s Hans Hailing, which was staged in Cagliari. A cycle of his paintings illustrated Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray which was published in a special edition as part of Telecom’s “Progetto Italia” initiative for Christmas 2004 with an afterword by the art critic Philippe Daverio. The latter would dedicate in February 2005 ample space to Arrivabene’s work on his program Passepartout, which is broadcast on Raitre, the third channel of the Italian state TV. In the same month, Vittorio Sgarbi invited him to take part in the exhibitions Il Male. Esercizi di pittura crudele at the Stupingi Hunting Lodge of Turin and, successively, Il ritratto interiore. Da Lotto a Pirandello at the Archaeological Museum of Aosta, and L’inquietidune del volto. Da Lotto a Freud, held in November at the Banca Popolare di Lodi’s Renzo Piano designed exhibition hall.” here

Lelio Orsi, Saint Miguel subduing Satan and weighing the Souls of the Dead

Lelio Orsi (1508/1511 - 1587) was an Italian Renaissance painter of the Reggio Emilia school. He was born and died inNovellara, and much of his work was completed in Reggio. He appears to have studied under such as Giovanni Giarola, a pupil of Antonio da Correggio. There is documentary evidence that he visited Rome in 1554-55, and may have been influenced by Girolamo BedoliCorreggio and the prototypic mannerists Giulio Romano as well as Michelangelo and his successor Daniele da Volterra. He is said to have trained Raffaellino da Reggio. He was active in both exterior and interior decoration, and much of his work is in small cabinet pieces, not large altarpieces. Much of his output ended in the collections of the dukes of Este in Ferrara.

Orsi appears to be “reading” Correggio with the lens of Mannerist, the nocturnal, limned ethereal simplicity of Corregio here is constrained into contorted poses, perspective distorted, and settings crowded. The effect at times is unsettling. While the angels above unsheating divine swords are meant to carry the day, in The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine it appears that the execution was stymied by the breakdown of floors and gears.

Amulet, ca.1730-1830 Culture: Tlingit, British Columbia Material: sperm whale tooth.

Shamans wore amulets around their necks and held them against a patient’s afflicted area to remove the malevolence that caused the illness. To undertake spiritual activities such as healing, shamans journeyed to the land of the dead. Such a journey is rendered on this amulet. The ancient form of a head canoe carries the figures through time and space, across the border between life and death.

Rape of the Sabine Women, Pablo Picasso, MFA, Boston

Painted when he was eighty-two, this is Picasso’s last major statement about the horrors of war, perhaps inspired by the Cuban missile crisis. Here, Picasso transforms a familiar subject from the art of the past-the story of early Romans who, suffering a shortage of marriageable women, invited the neighboring Sabines to Rome and then carried off all their young women. Against a sunny background of blue sky and green fields, the overlapping forms of grotesquely distorted figures are compressed into the foreground space, the horses and soldiers trampling a woman and her child.

Portraits of Women Living as Men to Escape Oppression in the Balkans

Photography by Jill Peters

‘Sworn Virgin’ is the term given to a biological female in the Balkans who is chosen to take on the social identity of a man for life. Dating back hundreds of years, this was necessary in societies that lived within tribal clans, followed the Kanun, an archaic code of law, and maintained an oppressive rule over the female gender. The Kanun states that women are considered to be the property of their husbands. The freedom to vote, drive, conduct business, earn money, drink, smoke, swear, own a gun or wear pants was traditionally the exclusive province of men.

As an alternative, becoming a  Sworn Virgin, or ‘burnesha’, elevated a woman to the status of a man and granted her all the rights and privileges of the male population. In order to manifest the transition such a woman cut her hair, donned male clothing and sometimes even changed her name. Male gestures and swaggers were practiced until they became second nature. Most importantly of all, she took a vow of celibacy to remain chaste for life. This practice continues today but as modernization inches toward the small villages nestled in the Alps, this archaic tradition is increasingly seen as obsolete. Only a few aging Sworn Virgins remain.—Jill Peters

This doesn’t mention that sworn virgins usually arose out of a need for bequeathing.  in families that had no male heir the oldest girl would become a sworn virgin to maintain the family property.  you can read more in the book Gender Diversity by Serena Nanda.

The term “nostalgia” was coined by a Swiss doctor, Johannes Hofer, in a dissertation submitted to Basel University in 1688. It was meant to be used as a medical term to describe a depressed mood caused by intense longing to return home.
