““Kids who learn two languages young are better able to learn abstract rules and to reverse rules that they’ve already learned. They’re less likely to have difficulty choosing between conflicting possibilities when there are two possible responses that both present themselves. They’re also better at figuring out what other people are thinking, which is probably because they have to figure out which language to use every time they talk to somebody in order to communicate.””

J.P. Simon after Richard Westall (1765-1836), illustration to Book I.375, stipple engraving. The Poetical Works of John Milton, vol. 1 (London: John and Josiah Boydell and George Nicoll, 1794). Ee.a.2A, facing p.15.

John and Josiah Boydell published this epic three-volume edition of Milton’s works in 1794. The text was set by the great artisan printer William Bulmer (1757-1830). Richard Westall’s twelve plates for Paradise Lost were stipple engraved by six different craftsmen. A Royal Academician by the age of nineteen and later Queen Victoria’s drawing master, Westall also contributed illustrations to the Boydells’ celebrated edition of Shakespeare (1795-1805) and five paintings to their Shakespeare Gallery. Hazlitt disparagingly remarked that his figures ‘look as if cut from wood’. However, the chiseled, Grecian features of his Satan (here summoning his prostrate legions) are strongly reminiscent of the style of his contemporary Henry Fuseli, who also illustrated Paradise Lost between 1790 and 1802.

A Gorge in the Mountains (Kauterskill Clove) - Sanford Robinson Gifford, 1862

A Gorge in the Mountains is the first major representative of a series of upright paintings of Kauterskill Clove in the eastern Catskill Mountains that Gifford executed right up to the year of his death in 1880. Before him, Thomas Cole and other artists had emphasized the sublime, or fearsome, aspect of the storied locale. Gifford, in emulation of the English master J. M. W. Turner, introduced dazzling sunlight and gauzy atmosphere that seem to hollow out the clove to echo the sun’s circular shape, transforming the vale into a realm suspended between reality and reverie.
