René Magritte, Le thérapeute (The Healer), 1967
Towards the end of his life, Magritte worked on a series of sculptures based on eight of his paintings. Although he oversaw the making of full-scale wax models, he died before they were cast in bronze. The figure of the healer (at times called ‘The Liberator’) had appeared in several works [an example] by Magritte since 1936. In 1937, Magritte himself was photographed in the same pose, with a blanket over his head and a canvas in place of the cage.
