Joao Ruas for “The Gilded Age” at Thinkspace Gallery.

Opening on Saturday, September 12th at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, California is the extremely anticipated three person exhibition, “The Gilded Age,” featuring the epic work of Joao RuasEsao Andrews and Aaron Horkey.  Above is Joao’s contribution for the show which as a whole is described as “[A] fortuitous result of a seemingly unlikely petproject, and a rare and unprecedented opportunity for collectors, fans and enthusiasts to see these three illustrative giants wring life from inanimate sands.”

Joao is one of my favorite artists working in the world today.  His work has been described as imagery that “explores the universal themes of transition, power, strength, transformation and loss with an empathetic tenor.”  Ruas has a love for detail unmatched and his work inhabits the purist realm of imagination.  He’s gifted in his ability to bring forth exotic imagery from the dimension we do not possess to our senses here, in this place.

If you’re in Los Angeles, do not miss this show.

Superb Coin From The Birthplace Of Asclepius

This silver drachm, struck circa 250-245 BC, is from the ancient city of Epidaurus (map) in Argolis, Greece. It displays the laureate head of Apollo Maleatas on the obverse. The reverse shows Asclepius (Asklepios) seated on a stool, holding a long scepter in his left hand and extending his right over the head of a serpent that coils before him. A hound is seated underneath his stool. This coin is probably the finest Epidaurus drachm known. The estimated value of this drachm is $40,000 - 50,000.

Epidaurus was reputed to be founded by or named for the ArgolidEpidauros, and to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son, Asclepius the god of medicine. The city was known for its sanctuary situated about five miles (8 km) from the town, as well as its theater (photo), which is once again in use today. The cult of Asclepius at Epidaurus is attested in the 6th century BC, when the older hill-top sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas was no longer spacious enough.

The asclepeion at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of the Classical world, the place where ill people went in the hope of being cured. To find out the right cure for their ailments, they spent a night in the enkoimeteria, a big sleeping hall. In their dreams, the god himself would advise them what they had to do to regain their health.

Lalibela’s Rock-Hewn Churches

In a mountainous region in the heart of Ethiopia, some 645 km from Addis Ababa, eleven medieval monolithic churches were carved out of rock. Their building is attributed to King Lalibela who set out to construct in the 12th century a ‘New Jerusalem’, after Muslim conquests halted Christian pilgrimages to the holy Land. Lalibela flourished after the decline of the Aksum Empire.

Saudi Arabia to send planes to Turkey for Islamic State (ISIS) fight - 13 February 2016

proisrael:

Saudi Arabia will send aircraft to NATO-member Turkey’s Incirlik air base for the fight against Islamic State militants in Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was reported as saying on Saturday.
Saudi Arabia has resumed its participation in air strikes against Islamic State in recent weeks and US Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Thursday welcomed its commitment to expand its role.
“Saudi Arabia is now sending planes to Turkey, to Incirlik. They came and carried out inspections at the base,” Cavusoglu told the Yeni Safak newspaper, adding it was unclear how many planes would come and that the Saudis might also send soldiers.
Saudi officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Cavusoglu’s remarks.
US President Barack Obama has ruled out sending US ground troops to Syria. But Saudi Arabia this month offered ground forces to fight Islamic State and Cavusoglu said Turkey and the Saudis would support a coalition ground operation.
“We said that if there is such a strategy, Turkey and Saudi Arabia can join a ground operation,” he told the Yeni Safak paper on the sidelines of a security conference in Munich.
Major powers agreed in Munich on Friday to a pause in combat in Syria, but Russia pressed on with bombing in support of its ally President Bashar al-Assad, who promised to fight on until he regained full control of the country.
Four months of Russian air strikes in Syria have helped Assad wrest back territory from rebels fighting government forces, alarming Gulf Arab states who back the insurgents.
Asked if Saudi troops could enter Syria from Turkey, Cavusoglu said: “This is a wish, not a planned thing. Saudi Arabia is sending planes and says, ‘I can send soldiers for a ground operation when it is necessary.”

“In spite of the flood of disturbing reports coming from both the Antarctic and the Arctic—just a few days ago, the National Snow and Ice Data Center reported that the extent of the Arctic ice cap in winter had hit a record low for the second year in a row—the issue of climate change has rarely come up during the Presidential primary campaign.”

The Nereids were sea nymphs in Greek mythology, fifty in total, daughters of Nereus and Doris. They helped sailors on their voyages when they faced fierce storms. They lived with their father in the depths of the Aegean Sea.
