The Most Accurate World Map for Three Centuries

Of the ten surviving manuscript copies of the Kitab Rudjdjar (literally “The book of Roger” in Arabic) or Tabula Rogeriana, the earliest surviving copy, preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (MS Arabe 2221), has been dated to about 1300. It is copy of a world map drawn in 1154 by the Arab geographer, Abu Abd Allah Muhammad al-Idrisi al-Qurtubi al-Hasani al-Sabti, or simply El Idrisi, or  Muhammad al-Idrisi.

“Al-Idrisi worked on the accompanying commentaries and illustrations of the map for eighteen years at the court of the Norman King Roger II of Sicily. The map, written inArabic, shows the Eurasian continent in its entirety, but only shows the northern part of the African continent. The map is actually oriented with the North at the bottom. It remained the most accurate world map for the next three centuries.

“Roger II of Sicily had his world map drawn on a circle of silver weighing about 400 pounds. The works of Al-Idrisi include Nozhat al-mushtaq fi ikhtiraq al-afaq - a compendium of the geographic and sociological knowledge of his time as well as descriptions of his own travels illustrated with over seventy maps; Kharitat al-`alam al-ma`mour min al-ard (Map of the inhabited regions of the earth) wherein he divided the world into 7 regions, the first extending from the equator to 23 degrees latitude, and the seventh being from 54 to 63 degrees followed by a region uninhabitable due to cold and snow.

On the work of al-Idrisi, S. P. Scott commented:

“The compilation of Edrisi marks an era in the history of science. Not only is its historical information most interesting and valuable, but its descriptions of many parts of the earth are still authoritative. For three centuries geographers copied his maps without alteration. The relative position of the lakes which form the Nile, as delineated in his work, does not differ greatly from that established by Baker and Stanley more than seven hundred years afterwards, and their number is the same. The mechanical genius of the author was not inferior to his erudition. The celestial and terrestrial planisphere of silver which he constructed for his royal patron was nearly six feet in diameter, and weighed four hundred and fifty pounds; upon the one side the zodiac and the constellations, upon the other-divided for convenience into segments-the bodies of land and water, with the respective situations of the various countries, were engraved” (Wikipedia article on Muhammad al-Idrisi, accessed 01-12-2009).

“Thou, Gilgamesh, let full be thy belly,
Make thou merry by day and by night.
Of each day make thou a feast of rejoicing,
Day and night dance thou and play!
Let thy garments be sparkling fresh,
Thy head be washed; bathe thou in water.
Pay heed to the little one that holds on to thy hand,
Let thy spouse delight in thy bosom!
For this is the task of mankind!”

Zhang Qian (traditional Chinese 張騫; simplified Chinese 张骞; Wade-Giles Chang Ch’ien, pronounced “Jang Chyen”) was an imperial envoy to the world outside of China in the 2nd century BCE, during the time of the Han Dynasty. He was the first official diplomat to bring back reliable information about Central Asia to the Chinese imperial court, then under Emperor Wu of Han, and played an important pioneering role in the Chinese colonization and conquest of the region now known as Xinjiang.

Today Zhang Qian’s travels are associated with the major route of transcontinental trade, the Silk Road. In essence, his missions opened up to China the many kingdoms and products of a part of the world then unknown to the Chinese. Zhang Qian’s accounts of his explorations of Central Asia are detailed in the Early Han historical chronicles, Records of the Grand Historian or Shiji, compiled by Sima Qian in the 1st century BCE . Today Zhang Qian is considered a national hero and revered for the key role he played in opening China to the world of commercial trade. (wikipedia)

Han Wudi (Han Wu-ti), the “Martial Emperor.” During his long reign, from 141 to 87 B.C., the boundaries and influence of the Chinese empire were greatly extended through a series of military campaigns. The policy of expansionism was primarily directed against the Xiongnu (Hsiung-nu), the name given to various Central Asian nomadic tribal groups of the period. The Xiongnu (sometimes inaccurately identified with the Huns) pressured Han northern borders throughout the duration of the dynasty, but during Han Wudi’s reign Chinese armies of up to 150,000 men destroyed Xiongnu power south of the Gobi desert and penetrated deep into Central Asia, in part to protect the trading caravans carrying surplus silk from China. At this time Chinese culture also began to take root in the territories of modern Korea and Vietnam.

Black schist sarcophagus of Ankhnesneferibre

British Museum EA 32.
26th dynasty, about 530 BC.
From Thebes. Found in the tomb at Deir el-Medina.
Ankhnesneferibre was the last “God’s Wife of Amun” before the Persian conquest of 525 BC. The lid shows her clasping the royal crook and flail, symbolising her powerful position in Thebes. The sarcophagus was reused in Roman times by Amenhotep-Pimentu, a priest, who added the inscription around the upper edge of the coffer. He also added his own name in the princess’s cartouches and changed the pronouns in the text.

Scene of victory of a Mayan temple

This limestone lintel belongs to a series of three panels commissioned by Bird Jaguar IV Structure of Yaxchilan No. 21, was at some point, located above the entrance portal of the central chamber.

The image of Bird Jaguar IV dominates the scene as a prisoner lying at her feet. Bird Jaguar wears the same clothing warrior wears his father Lintel Structure No. 26 No. 23 and carrying a spear in his right hand. The Prisoner of Bird Jaguar was arrested probably in 752 AD in a battle between local rivals City, as is apparent in the first two prints seen in the upper left corner of the lintel. The prisoner is seen holding a broken umbrella in her right hand, an attribute of warriors defeated.

The scenes depicting the public display of prisoners are common in Maya art. In general, illustrates the preparation of the rituals of blood collection. In this piece, we see drops of blood in the nose and cheek of the prisoner.

The capture of sacrificial victims was an essential facet in Maya warfare as they were needed for various rituals. The rituals of ascension, for example, consisted in the offering of human sacrifices that marked the enthronement of a new ruler.

The ancient Greeks told stories about many strange creatures. Skylla was part-woman, part-sea-monster, with six dogs’ heads. Can you see them coming out of her waist? The writer Homer said that each of her heads had three rows of teeth, ‘thick and close, and full of black death’.

Skylla lived in a cave in a high cliff. Sailors had to sail close to the cliff or they would be sucked into a huge whirlpool nearby. As they sailed past, Skylla’s six heads would snatch six victims from the decks of the ship.

L’entente cordiale - Roger Fenton. English and French soldiers having a drink together in the lines before Sebastopol during the Crimean War. 1855. On the subject of this photograph, the critic Ernest Lacan wrote: “We have often heard about the entente cordiale […] it is the “Open Sesame!” of the future; but no-one can better put the idea of it into practice than soldiers from different nations fighting side by side in the Middle East for the same cause”.

Walker Evans began to photograph in the late 1920s, making snapshots during a European trip. Upon his return to New York, he published his first images in 1930. During the Great Depression, Evans began to photograph for the Resettlement Administration, later known as the Farm Security Administration (FSA), documenting workers and architecture in the Southeastern states. In 1936 he traveled with the writer James Agee to illustrate an article on tenant farm families for Fortune magazine; the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men came out of this collaboration.

Throughout his career Evans contributed photographs to numerous publications, including three devoted solely to his work. In 1965 he left Fortune, where he had been a staff photographer for twenty years, to become a professor of photography and graphic design at Yale University. He remained in the position until 1974, a year before his death.”
